Dental Hygiene

Here in the United States, we have the best preventative oral health treatments anywhere, and did you know that it has been consistently reported that over 75% of Americans have some form of Gum Disease! Wow, that number is far too high, however, you can beat this statistic with consistent cleaning and dental exam appointments. Gums disease can appear in 3 stages, beginning with Gingivitis.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is simply inflammation of the gum tissue as a result of not brushing and flossing consistently. Thoroughly brushing and yes, flossing your teeth has the greatest impact before you go to sleep. Our mouths dry out with less saliva at bedtime, and bacteria will grow 10x faster in this environment. This stage of gum disease is reversible with a professional cleaning and proper home care. However, if it goes untreated the disease will progress to the next stages called Periodontal disease.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal Disease is an irreversible stage where you will may experience bone loss that supports your teeth. The tragedy is that bone loss will not grow back, and we don’t have a treatment option to repair that damage. If you reach this stage you will need a deeper cleaning that goes below the gum line and will include the use of laser technology to remove the inflammation. More importantly, periodontal disease has been linked to heart and kidney disease. If this stage continues it will develop into Advanced Periodontitis.

Advanced Periodontitis

Advanced Periodontitis is a more advanced, irreversible stage of gum disease, where the bone loss may be so great that teeth will become loose, and require removal. It is essential that immediate treatment is executed at this stage to preserve and stabilize the disease.

Laser Hygiene Therapy

Laser Hygiene Therapy Research has proven that the use of high tech lasers as an adjunct to scaling and root planning (SRP) dramatically improves the effectiveness of curing Periodontal Disease. In addition, when the lasers are utilized during periodontal therapy, there can be less discomfort for our patients.

The importance of regular cleanings and dental exam appointments, which always includes a complete oral cancer screening, is essential to your overall health.
